What Causes Constant Ammonia Smell In The Nose Followed By Headaches?

Hello , I have been smelling a smell that can onyl be described as a battery ,,electrical, sulfur, all mixed together.I have been smelling this since about august of last year. I have been blaming this smell on m lap top. but no one else can smell it.I blamed it too on tobacco, I quit smoking 6 months ago,, and the smell is stronger than ever. I have had 2 mild seizures within the last 2 weeks, I had these as a kid , but have not had them since I was about 16.when this smell become very strong I am getting a very sharp pain in the top center of my head. the pain is a very sharp pain like an ice pick in my brain. this has been happening for a few weeks and m patience and temper is way off. I have been very easily irritated , as this is not normal either

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Phantosmia that is smelling something that is not there or no one else can smell can be caused due to many causes. Nasal polyp, nasal infection, Alzheimer's, epilepsy etc. You have mentioned that you had two episodes of seizures when you were 16 and faced the same problem back then. So it is likely that this time also it may be due to some neurological disorder. I would advise you to get yourself checked by a neutral as soon as possible. He may advise you to get an EEG and CT scan to diagnose your condition. Treatment will depend on the result of your tests.

Hope I have answered your query.
