What Causes Constant Bleeding, Severe Cramps And Bloating After Replacing A Mirena IUD?

My wife has had the Mirena IUC for five years. She recently, a few months ago, had the old one removed and replaced. Since then, she s had fairly continual bleeding, occurring for about a week every two to three weeks, bleeding after running or exercise, and now has moderate to severe cramping, bloating, headaches, and a general feeling of being unwell, as well as lethargy. Is this normal or is there cause for concern? I can t get her to call her OB/GYN.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Mirena normally is well tolerated and is also used to treat bleeding problems in women. In the case of your wife, she will need to have an examination to rule out a complication with an infection while inserting the new Mirena device. In this case, she will need it removed and start on high dose antibiotics. Also, another possible cause would be endometrial thickening, so if the antibiotics are not helping, she may need a D&C and have the samples biopsied.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
