What Causes Constant Irregular Spotting And Bleeding While Being On Mirena?

I have been on the Mirena since January 13,2015. I have had almost constant irregular spotting and bleeding since I have had it. My OB had me take a medicine for 14 days and it made my cycle somewhat regular for about 1 month. I am averaging a period every 14 days and some spotting in between. Is this normal for the first year on Mirena or should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
Mirena is levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device used for birth control that is indicated for intrauterine contraception for up to 5 years.
The most common side effects of Mirena are missed periods, bleeding and spotting between periods, heavier bleeding during the first few weeks after device insertion, abdominal/pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, back pain, headache/migraine, nervousness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, weight gain, acne, mood changes and loss of interest in sex.
In case the irregular spotting and bleeding is bothering you and making you uncomfortable, then you need to consult Gynecologist for proper advise regarding the change in contraceptive method.
Hope the information provided is useful.
Wish you good luck.
