Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I have neck pain from an injury which has been an ongoing source of pain. At times the pain will be in my neck and up into my jaw and ear, only on the left and my jaw is so painful and stiff I can barely open my mouth. It happens if I sit for a while, an hour or more and I get some relief by moving my jaw and applying ice. should I be concerned by this?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Pain in neck, jaw and ear accompanied by stiff jaw is suggestive of pathology in the temporo-mandibular joint (TM) joint or the joint connecting the jaw bone with temporal bone. Ill-fitting dentures or ill-fitting filling is one of the common cause of pain in TM joint. In case. you have a history of ill-fitting dentures or filling, you need to consult your dentist for correction. In the absence of such history, TM joint can be painful due to osteoarthritis or ankylosis of the TM joint. In the meanwhile, you can take pain killers to control the pain in TM joint and surrounding areas. I suggest you to consult a dental surgeon or an ENT surgeon for further management.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
