Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son, 14 years of age, was having continual nose bleeds, at least 3 a week, from Dec-May. They stopped, it seemed, almost as soon as school let out. He began Jiu Jitsu in June and the nose bleeds have begun again. The bleeds only occur in the left nostril and do not last long, however, they only occur during Jiu Jitsu practice. What could be the cause? What can we do to limit the bleeds?
Nose Bleed is not uncommon in children. The main reason is drying of nose and abundant blood vessels in nose (which can be more in one side). Due to injury to these blood vessels they start bleeding. Seasonal allergies, hot weather, excessive exercise, habit of picking of nose are a few reason that can cause bleeding to occur.
In his case he is going for Jiu Jitsu classes which include strenuous exercise, that leads to increase pressure in the blood vessels to increase. That might ruptures the blood vessels, leads to bleeding. You can keep this occurrence low if you keep the nose moist and body cool. You can use liquid paraffin or oil from your kitchen self to lubricate the surface. If problem persists you should consult ENT specialist for detailed examination.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
