What Causes Constant Pain In The Legs After Diskectomy?

I had surgery on Dec. 14, 2017 for herniated disc which went well. BUT my leg ached for a long time and my doctor said it will go away in time. However, the ache has now turned into a constant pain down my leg and I have to take Advil, Aleve, Tylenol, Motrin every day for this horrible pain. I am worried that I take too many pain pills and wonder how much longer this pain will continue. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, one of the risks of this procedure is the constant pain after surgery. it is due to nerve root damage during the procedure. Pain will go after nerve roots are completely healed. It can take weeks to few months until then you can take pain killers.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
