What Causes Constipation When Diagnosed With Hernia In Belly?

I was told today (June 10) that I have a hernia in my belly. I thought it was belly fat. I made an app t with a surgeon, thinking I should go right away. July 1 is my app t. I have constipation if I don t take a med for it, and I do strain a lot at times. I am 75 female. Sounds serious to me, but I have no pain in my belly.

Hi,

Hernia is an abnormal bulging of organ or tissue. Common one is inguinal hernia. Since it is a defect, it should be corrected by surgery only. Symptoms will be depends on the organ or tissue in the hernia. Contents of hernia may be small bowel, large bowel, bladder, etc. Whatever it is, there may be chance of looping and get obstructed. Stasis of food particles result in infections which may be severe enough to cause sepsis occasionally.

Constipation may be due other causes such decreased dietary fibre intake. If the organ in hernia is large bowel, chance of constipation is high. If the symptoms recurring and severely disturbing your day to day life, I suggest you go for the surgery as early as possible to prevent further complications. Take diet rich in fibre to avoid constipation of other causes. Balanced diet helps in maintain the nutrients in the body.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
