What Causes Continued Regular Periods At The Age Of 61?

I am a 61 year old woman that still has her period monthly. I have had a lot of test done and I do not have cancer. They say I have a young persons uterus the thickness is 4.8. My doctor says I make estrogen. He said if I continue to bleed I should return and discuss options. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The average age of menopause is 51 years old. A very tiny fraction of women go through it as late as 58 to 60 years old, but after this age a small number of women enter menopause. In case of heavy bleeding, you can visit your doctor. Otherwise, I would suggest you to regularly monitor your health every 6 months with pap smear and pelvic ultrasound.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
