Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A 2 year old with a productive cough since Jan(started pre-school),has gotten worse in last 2 weeks-mucus so thick it causes vomiting, fever 101 to 102 since Tuesday.MD said fluids & Tylenol as needed, grandmother ABT are needed because post nasal drip does not cause a fever. Should an ER visit be made?
A cough comes from your respiratory tract, while vomitus comes from a food tube. A thick mucus should not cause vomiting. Both of these symptoms could be unrelated to each other.
A productive cough in 2 year old could be due to RSV virus and it causes a condition called bronchiolitis. If your child had repeated upper respiratory infections along with thick mucus, I would suggest that you get your child screened for cystic fibrosis.
I would suggest that you should take him to ER if your child still has a persistent high-grade fever.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saralkumar R. Desai,
