What Causes Cough Along With Wheezing, Headache And Joint Ache?

my 14 yr old son has been sick for like 3 weeks now. his symptoms are coughing, wheezing, headache, joint aches, muscle weakness, no fever, Vomiting and diarrhea. i have taken him to urgent care about 2 weeks ago they said it was a virus and they couldn t do anything but keep hydrated, so the next couple of days he was still feeling the same so i took him to his pediatrician. she also said the same thing it is a virus and they couldn t do anything. i had to let it run its course. Now he feels worse with the same symptoms and no fever. what could this be??? should i take him to the emergency room???

Hello,

Based on the history you have shared, it can be viral infection attack, but the prolongation of the symptoms needs to be evaluated at least by baseline investigations like complete blood count as well as the chest x-ray.

Meanwhile, OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen along with antihistamines like Cetirizine or Loratidine can be of symptomatic relief. If wheeze or shortness of breath is getting worst, then he may need to be reviewed in an emergency for nebulizations of salbutamol.

Antibiotics may not be needed at this stage, but a Pulmonologist opinion should be sought as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin
