What Causes Cough And Excessive Mucus In Throat?

I m 76 years old with no history of heart problem othere than trace mitral valve regurgitation. Lately when I feel some small bit of mucus causes me to cough, I m not successful at bringing it up. Now I imagine mucus building up in my lungs. Is there a remedy ?

Hello,

For mucus, to get out of the system, you need to thin it down and cough it out. The medication used to thin mucus are called mucolytics. They are acetylcysteine, bromhexine, ambroxol, and carbocistene. Few over the counter mucolytics are Mucolyte and Mucomyst. You can have any of the above mentioned drugs. Even if you don't use drugs, the mucus will get out of your body but at a slow pace.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
