What Causes Cough And Sudden Pain In Left Side Of Breast Long After Double Mastectomy?
I had a double mastectomy with reconstruction in 2008. For the past 6 weeks I have had a cough that comes and goes. One week ago I sat up and started coughing and got a sudden severe sharp pain just below my left breast at the top of the rib cage. I get the pain off and on, mostly on the left side. It is worse when I am sitting up. Today for the first time I had the sharp pain almost between the breasts but a little more in the right. It only happened once and lasted for a few seconds. When I m sitting up straight it feels like my ribs are pushing up into my breasts. There are also times my implants feel like they are on a brace and push up toward my neck. Is it possible I cracked or bruised a rib due to coughing and that is the cause of my pain?
Hello and thank you for your question Yes, it is possible to crack a rib from coughing, especially if you have osteoporosis. However, if you have been coughing for six weeks you need to see a doctor to get an exam and possible chest xray since there may be an infection going on either bronchitis or pneumonia. Please see a doctor as soon as possible Regards
