What Causes Cough And Throat Congestion?

I sometimes choke if I cough while drinking something warm. It feels like my throat shutts. Coughs get out , but air can t get in. It only last a few seconds but is very scary. I have to force myself to draw hard slow breaths, a little at a time, until I can draw a deep breath. Then everything is fine. It use to rarely happen, but seems more frequent, and harder to recover.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

By your history and description, possibility of angioedema is more likely. It is sudden spasm of wind pipe. It is mostly seen with allergy. Best treatment of allergy is identification of allergen and if possible complete avoidance of it. So now onward try to observe that any specific smell or food or chemical causes you these symptoms. Try to avoid it.
Once symptoms started, you should take antihistamine (Levocetrizine or Fexofenadine) and anti allergic (montelukast).

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
