What Causes Cough, Fever And Vomiting?

Hello: My husband started coughing this morning and has been doing so all day. He is running a fever of 101 and just started vomiting. The vomit was black! He told me he feels like there is an elephant sitting on his chest. He has cold chills as well. Should I be concerned about getting him medical assistance tonight? Why is his vomit black? He had a grilled chicken salad for dinner.

Hello...Please do not panic, but it is imperative that you take your husband to the emergency room right away.
A black colour vomit could occur due to the presence of blood in the stomach which changes colour over some time. Has he also passed blackish stools?
He may be having a stomach ulcer which could have bled.
It could also be due to bleeding from esophageal varices( dilated veins).
He needs an urgent upper g.i. endoscopy to identify the problem.
Lets hope for the best...
