What Causes Cough Followed By Sudden Blackouts?

My 64 yo brother -in-law has recently experienced brief periods of blackouts. It begins with an urge to cough, then he begins to grunt, face turns red and blue lips, and about 20 seconds later he regains consciousness and acts as if nothing happened. He wonders why we re gathered around him. This is not a full blown grand mal seizure and he remains sitting the entire time. The hospital staff diagnosed him as having CHF, but I don t know if this could create sufficient hypoxia to cause this symptom. Any ideas?

This looks a typical case of hypoxia which most probably is due to congestive heart failure.

The effects can be due to any medications causing postural hypotension e.g clonidine but CHF seems more likely here considering his old age.

Congestive heart failure can lead to transiently decreased perfusion to the brain which can lead to syncope ie blackouts, + drs would have diagnosed him as CHF only after detailed investigations which would have been suggestive of CHF.

So I think u should trust the doctors and take it as it is.
