What Causes Cough With Wheezing?

I have a cough with wheeze but not really other symptoms. Have heard family members complain about a 100 day cough. Is that a bacterial or viral issue? Have been taken expectorant to keep the cough productive but it is now in the third week and I am geting concerned. I am a 65 year old diabetic on an insulin pump and pretty healthy otherwise. Good BP

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there,
I can understand your concern. The 100 day cough or pertusis is a bacterial infection. Cough with wheezing means that your airway is inflammed and is causing breathing diffculty. You need to be thoroughly examined by a chest and lung specialist as for your age and being diabetic puts you at risk for pneumonia and it can become chronic without proper treatment. Keep your sugars under control till then and try to take sugar free syrups if you are taking any.
Take care.
