What Causes Cough, congestion And Loss Of Appetite In Children?

21/2 year old little girl, very healthy most of the time. Had a cold and cough last week and then on Tuesday of this week started to cry which is very unusual for her. She was and is still is very lethargic. No specific pain, but loss of appetite. A low fever that comes and goes. She sleeps a lot and rarely gets off the bed. She drinks well and doesn t show any signs of dehydration. Really dark around the eyes. The first 2 days she coughed up a lot of mucus, but that has stopped. She coughs a little and its still very loose. Are we dealing with a flu or cold bug or could this be a more serious disease?

The main thing I would be concerned about with the extreme lethargy and persistent fevers is a possible meningitis or encephalitis. These could be caused by either bacteria or viruses. The bacterial causes need prompt treatment. Some viruses can also be treated. It would be best to have her evaluated in emergency to be sure she doesn't have anything serious like that. Hope this helps.
