What Causes Coughing Up Of Black Mucus, Recurrent Bronchitis, Pneumonia And Fever?

A friend of mine is coughing up black mucus, has general malaise, pitting edema and has suffered from reoccurring bouts of bronchitis, pneumonia, fever and a persistent cough. She has been to see a pulmonologist, an ear throat and nose doctor and her primary care physician. They ran tests for fungal infections, had a bronch test, sputum culture, and blood cultures and has turned up nothing. She is 35 years old, an lpn, she is caucasian, he weighs about 160 lbs and is about 5 8 and the symptoms have been going on for four and a half months. Any ideas or advice?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

There can be various atypical conditions of lungs which can present with black mucus, recurrent bronchitis, pneumonia and fever as restrictive or infiltrative lung disorder, sarcoidosis, pneumoconiosis or others. Above possibilities are explained in ileu of sputum culture and blood reports turning out negative.

The ultimate diagnostic and gold standard tests would be CT guided or endoscopic lung biopsy for the tissue details after getting a contrast CT scan of the chest.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
