Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My grandson is in basic training down at Fort Benning. He has been coughing for the past two weeks and says he is now spitting up blood through his mouth and nostrils. If he goes to sick bay, apparently he will be punished by his sergeant. Military justice. I am very concerned about him and am trying to figure out what he should do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If he has an acute upper respiratory tract infection (cough/cold) then this would cause inflammation of the airways and can sometimes cause bleeding to occur.
The blood should resolve when the infection resolves.
If he can use over the counter cough and cold medications then this may help with the cough and nasal congestion.
I hope this helps
