What Causes Coughing Up Of Brown And Yellow Phlegm?

Have excess mucus. Cough up white, brown, and yellow. Some very thick and some thin. Have had this for a long time weeks, thin mucus in throth for months maybe years. Wake up at night and have to spit it out. No fever. Have had some diarea for quite some time on and off. Stool looks it has mucus in it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As per your description, different conditions can be predicted like tuberculosis, COPD or other respiratory system pathology. To rule out, it does two things.
First, get sputum smear examination and chest x-ray to rule out tuberculosis as well as other infections.
Second, get pulmonary functions tests done for COPD and asthma.
If all conditions can be ruled out, the final possible cause can be a malignancy, for which CT scan and bronchoscopy required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
