Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Coughing Up Of Brown Phlegm In The Morning?
FOr the past 2-3 months I have noticed thick mucus first thing in the morning only. The last 2 weeks, the mucus is dark red or brown in color. When I cough it up and check the tissue it is more red than brown and appears to be bloody. I am in the medical field and had a PPD which was negative. Any suggestions?
Regarding your concern, I would explain that your symptoms could be related to a chronic infection (bronchitis) or a sinus infection.
Coming to this point, I would recommend performing a sinus X ray study and a chest X ray study, coupled with some blood lab tests (complete blood count, PCR, ESR). A bronchoscopy may be needed.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka,
Cardiologist
