Hi,
Cracking sound from big toe while walking, is usually a harmless condition which may be resulted from the pressure or trapped gas in the joint space or the snapping of a ligament with rapid movement. Cracking sounds can be occurred, when the foot is moved beyond its normal range of motion. It is commonly heard cracking when someone stretches or rolls his or her foot.
As the motions need the bones and ligaments to stretch, so the cracking sound from big toe while walking, can be audible. Again, cracking sound from big toe may also be resulted from underlying health conditions like injury or trauma,
stress fracture, arthritis,
osteoarthritis, gout etc. Rest with foot elevation, ice and heat application, taking non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS like
Ibuprofen,
Naproxen or
Aceclofenac, steroid injection administration etc., may help to reduce inflammation and pain. You can also consult your doctor for further evaluation and treatment purposes.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
