What Causes Cradle Cap Or Seborrheic Dermatitis On The Scalp?

My special needs 15 year old daughter has all of a sudden developed something that looks like cradle cap it is mostly on the front top hair line and side burn area but has a little in her eye brow s on the scalp it looks like thick flakes that cover patches of the scalp and she does not want me to touch it what is it caused from?

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that your daughter is suffering from Seborrheic dermatitis also known as Cradle cap and the white flakes on the front hairline and side burns seems to be due to it..
It can occur due to a few causes like fungal overgrowth that is present in small numbers on the skin normally,genetic causes,change in weather, immunodeficiency etc..
I would suggest you to consult a Trichologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and microscopic examination of flakes can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised to wash her scalp with a shampoo containing Ketoconazole, coal tar, sulfide, zinc, selenium etc..
You can also be advised to apply steroid lotion over the scalp..
In a few causes Pimecrolimus can also be advised..
Keep the scalp dry and clean..
In case if there is itching anti allergics like benadryl can be advised..
