What Causes Cramping Pain Before Bowel Movement?

What causes a crampy pain just before a bowl movement. This is like something is trying to move and is stuck or like the feeling of diaherria. Only it occurs only occasionally and may even occur during the night. It feels like I could vomit from the discomfort and I break out into a cold sweat. I am relieved when I have a little bowl movement and the discomfort subsides.
