What Causes Cramps In Calves And Feet While Sleeping?

my wife has had SEVERE cramps in her calves and feet that wake her up while she s sleeping. This occurs sometimes 2-3 times/wk, sometimes she goes for 2-3 wks with no problems. They are so painful that you cannot touch her legs. Sometimes the pain goes away after 2-3 minutes, has occasionally lasted up to 10 minutes. Only go away after she gets up and stomps her feet, usually sitting on the side of the bed or leaning against the dresser

nocturnal leg cramps are seen in many and it seems to favour women more than men.
there are many reason for muscles to go in spasms which are painful and distressing

the most common reason is due to small amount of Potassium imbalance.
you must impress upon your wife that she takes plenty of fluids and some potassium rich fluids like fresh fruit juice or coconut water regularly to maintain proper fluid and electrolyte balance.
in all probability it will help.

cap vit E 600 IU at night for about 10 days also helps. since it is a vitamin supplement should be available OTC you can try that in most cases it gets rid of the problem.

if it still persists then chances are that she may be having some other issue which will need investigation restless leg syndrome being one of them a consult with a neurologist and a sleep specialist in that case is recommended
