What Causes Cramps In The Buttocks After A Stroke?

My brother had a stroke back in Thanksgiving (end of Nov) and had a carotid stent put in. He slowly got better (speech and balance) and then went back in Feb 23 for open heart triple bypass surgery. His stroke symptoms reappeared (slurred speech - garbled) 2 days after. He is better now- speaking-but he has a cramp in his right buttock (left leg was used to supply bypass viens) that prevents him from walking around much. He is on Warfarin would Plavix be a more beneficial option? what could be causing that painful cramp? He is 57 years old. Was a smoker - truck driver -type 2 diabetic. he is going in to the cardiac doctor tomorrow.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms your brother is suggestive of peripheral vascular disease involving the femoral artery. Specially with the history of smoking and multiple cardiac bypasses, it is likely that he has an atherosclerotic plaque blocking the femoral artery or a little higher up. You should ask the cardiologist to examine the same, which could be done with an arterial doppler or a lower limb coronary angiogram.

I hope this helped.
