What Causes Cramps In The Lower Legs And Feet In An Elderly Person?

I am a 60 year old female. The only prescription meds. I take are for cholesterol. I have started having severe cramps in my lower legs and feet. This seems to happen at night when asleep....it wakes me up, I have to get out of bed and stand up to relieve the cramp and pain. Is this anything to be concerned about?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
dear madam
cramps in leg can be due to calcium and vitD deficiency.
please take supplements like calcimax or shelcal twice in a day.
Also take vit D3 supplement like upriseD3 once in a week for 3,-4 mth.
increase intake of calcium rich food like oats, milk and dairy products, sesame seeds, meat ,fish, poultry etc.
do exercise 30min everyday.
you can also blood test for total vit D level to confirm its deficiency.
expose yourself to sunshine for 15min everyday.
consult again if the above measure does not work.
wish you good health
