What Causes Crunching Sound Along With Stabbing Pain In Knees?

Hello, I have knee pain only when it comes in contact with an object, like bumping into something, kneeling if slightly tilted to the left or touching it. it s my left knee, on the outside, beside the patella. Doesn t hurt to walk, bend, or run, however, both knees make a crunching noise when going up steps. If i m kneeling and tilt even slightly to the left, it is severe stabbing pain. I m quite doctor shy and tend to only go when in excruciating pain. Is this maybe just a result of some injury that will eventually go away?
