Emergency Medicine Specialist, Dr. Tim Evans's Response
Hi. You have clearly sustained some significant injuries from your cycle accident. If you experiencing these symptoms then an injury to the mandible or at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) would need to be considered. A plain XRay of the mandibles would suffice in the first instance. Do you have any other symptoms such as pain on moving your jaw or opening your mouth? Or the sensation that your "bite" does not align properly. Are you able to open your mouth fully? If your symptoms are limited to the crunching sound, then I would be reassured if your XRay turned out to be unremarkable. However, I think given the extent of the injuries you sustained, you should get it checked out.
