Hello,

Tarsal cysts also called as chalazion. Chalazion is an inflammatory lesion of the eyelid. It is a common kind of inflammation. They are slowly enlarging eyelid nodules formed by inflammation and obstruction of sebaceous glands of the eyelids. A few causes are:
1) Poor lid hygiene (the precise causal role has not yet been established)
2) Seborrheic dermatitis
3) Rosacea
4) Chronic blepharitis
5) High blood lipid concentrations (possible risk from increased blockage of sebaceous glands)
6) Leishmaniasis
7) Tuberculosis
8) Immuno-deficiency
9) Viral infection
10) Carcinoma
11) Stress (causality has not been proven, and the mechanism by which it might act is unknown)
12) Trachoma
13) Eyelid trauma
14) Eyelid surgery

They are not at all contagious. Prognosis is very good after:
1) Conservative management
2) Medical therapy
3) Surgical intervention

After surgery, within few weeks, patient will be able to function normally. But to prevent the recurrence, the following measures are to be taken:
1) Adequate lid hygiene
2) Gentle lid margin massages for 10 minutes everyday
3) Limiting UV exposure with the help of sunglasses and hats

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
