What Causes Dark And Frequent Urination?

My son has dark urine and frequent urination. Went to ER on Friday night and was treated for a bladder infection. However, they mentioned that he has protein and blood in his urine. They gave him Rosephrin thru an IV and sent him home with an RX for Bacrtrim. Yesterday he said his urine looked bettter. However, he woke up this morning with bad stomach pain and dark urine again. After about 20 minutes or so it went away. The protein in the urine did concern the dr at er and said he would need to follow up in a week to see if that was gone as it is abnormal an could mean serious kidney problems. We are worried about it all. Can you give me any insight about the dark urine and proteins in the urine? What could that be? Also concerned about the stomach pain and dark urine worse again today. Worried about the dark urine and proteins. Afraid that is something more serious with his kidneys.

Hello,

Can you please mention the age of your son? Was there any rash, history of a cough/cold?

According to the points you mentioned your son had abdominal pain mostly colicky with urinary tract infection and urine examinations suggestive of proteinuria(passage of proteins through urine) and hematuria (passage of blood through urine).

Firstly, his complete blood count, sr creatinine, USG abdo+ kub (kidney+ureters+urinary bladder) should be done to rule out the presence of urinary stones or any structural abnormality.

Urine r/m should be repeated and if it still suggests hematuria/proteinuria. Then investigations should be done accordingly to r/o glomerular i.e. kidney related disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
