What Causes Dark Brown Spotting Between Periods?

have dark brown spotting between periods , almost close to my next cycle date but it is continuing. very little and sometimes just once in a day or occasionally. after urinating it is see on the toilet paper. I am 46 yrs and having irregular periods from last year. once visited a doc about six months back, got my ultrasound test done which showed no abnormality.
