What Causes Dark Brownish Vaginal Discharge Long After Discontinuing Depo Shot?

I last received my depo shot in May of 2014 (after 2 cpntinuous shots) then stopped and then received another on Dec 30th 2014. I have not taken it since but had dark brownish blood (light and on and off) from April 18th until about April 29th; since I haven t not received a period or any bleeding. how long does it take for my period to return and what does the brownish blood implicate?.Should I get on birth control pills for my period regulation help? ...Please advise

I think that the spotting may be related to using depo shot. Also, you may need to do a vaginal smear to check for possible infection.
