What Causes Dark Pigmentation And Swelling While Standing After Treating Broken Tibia?

Hello and thank you for reading my question. My name is jeff. My mother had broken her tibia in her leg about 2 weeks ago. She now has a rod in her leg and no cast but im concerned because just a minute ago she stood up with her crutches and her foot immediately turned pretty dark and swollen. I had her lay back down and elevate it and it returned to normal color. Is this normal or should I take her into the city s hospital to be looked at? Thx.

Hi,

Noted the history about your Mother having had fractured tibia, surgery to put in nail 15 days ago, got the swelling and discoloration after standing with crutches, you made her lie down and the color came back to normal.
This is quite uncommon finding.
There will be some time to develop edema and discoloration but your Mother's case this appeared fast.
his can be really a problem related to her venous system and needs to be confirmed or ruled out like Varicose veins. venous blockage due to DVT and so on.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Yes, take her to the Doctor/Hospital immediately.
Have clinical evaluation.
Ultrasound with color doppler of the affected limb is a must.
Relevant tests of blood.
Further management as per the cause found.
