What Causes Dark Pigmentation Of Skin While Treating Hyperbilirubemia In Infant?
Hello Doc, We had a baby girl recently who was born Fair but she is looking dark now, she has been diagnosed and treated for hyperbilirubemia for almost 10 days after birth under Phototherapy. Now she has recovered and we are using olive oil for massaging her body daily before bath.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Dark pigmentation or tanning of body can occur during phototherapy. However, the effect is temporary and the dark pigmentation starts disappearing once exposure to phototherapy is discontinued. Thus, there is no need to worry, the effects of phototherapy will disappear after some time. You can continue massaging of body with oils before bath. This will keep the skin soft and hydrated.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
