Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a darkened patch of skin under one armpit. This came on suddenly. It is not the armpit itself, but lower down. About the size of a golfball. No redness or itchiness. The skin is not raised at all. It does not bother me except for its sudden appearance and that is has stayed for over a month now.
Dark pigmentation in the arm pits can occur due to fungal infections, allergy to creams or drugs, sun exposure, dryness, inflammatory conditions or also due to endocrinal problems in your body. Any recent use of creams or hair removers should be stopped. Anti-fungal cream like miconazole can be applied after proper cleansing of the area.
Rule out endocrinal abnormalities like insulin resistance or thyroid disorders which can also cause hyper-pigmentation. Inflammatory causes can be treated with mild steroid creams like hydrocortisone which should be used only after doctor approval.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
