What Causes Dark Purple Discharge After Sinus Surgery?
I had endoscopic sinus surgery a week and a half ago (age 58, 160 lbs). I had a lot of dark purple discharge (I assumed it was from the blood mixed with the dissolvable packing. A couple of days ago, I started to feel increased pressure on the right side. The discharge also began to smell like ammonia. I blew most of that out over the next day, and felt better, but now the pressure and smell in the discharge are returning. Monday I go back for my checkup. Is this normal? What causes it? Is this something I need to handle before Monday if it doesn t get worse?
Post endoscopic sinus surgery discharge could be due to crusts inside nose, fungal infection, residual polyps, blood clots, upper respiratory tract infections. The diagnosis can only be confirmed by proper examination of nose under endoscope.Mean while you can continue on alkaline nasal douching atleast 2-3 times a day and follow up with your doctor for endoscopic cleaning of nose.
