What Causes Dark Purple Spot To The Side Of Knee?

I have a dime size dark purple spot just to the side of my knee. It does not hurt or itch or cause any discomfort, but It just doesn t go away. I have had it for more that 7 years. When I push on it the color goes away and then comes right back, still no pain. In the last couple of years 2 more have appeared. Any thoughts? I am no insulin dependent type II diabetic, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol if that helps.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It seems to be blood blisters. It can be formed due to skin getting pinched by any tool, heavy weight, forceful human contact or grappling. Blood blisters do not need any treatment and they commonly go away by themselves in one or two weeks.

You can apply ointment Thrombophob on the blisters for relief. If it hurts you, you can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) to ease the pain. When it heals you should be careful not to get it infected with any kind of bacteria.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
