What Causes Dark Red Urination Lately After Undergoing Cesarean?

I had a cesearan 7 weeks ago. I stopped bleeding after about 4 or 5 weeks. And just noticed it started back a day or two ago, I really only notice it when I pee but its a darker red,and a lot of it. I am breastfeeding and only pumping while she sleeps to relieve pressure. What could this be?

Hi,

Brief answer: Dark red urine may be a sign of bladder injury, which can occur during cesarean section. Consult with your GYN doctor for appropriate evaluation of your symptoms.

Detailed answer: The dark red urine you describe is called hematuria (i.e., blood in urine). Hematuria be caused by many different conditions including infection of the bladder or kidney, kidney stones, tumors of the kidney or bladder, and injury to the kidney, ureter, or bladder.

Considering the timing of your symptoms, it is possible that your bladder was injured during your cesarean section. Rarely, as a result of this bladder injury, an abnormal connection called a fistula can form between the bladder and the uterus. It takes time for vesicouterine fistula forms, and so symptoms such as hematuria (menouria) may not present until weeks to years after the bladder injury occurred. Surgery is typically required to successfully treat these fistulas.

I suggest that you talk with your (GYN) doctor so that your symptoms can be appropriately evaluated. This evaluation may include a pelvic exam, analysis of urine, ultrasound of bladder and uterus, and cystoscopy to visualize the bladder.

Hope this helps answer your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care,

Dr. Aaron Shapiro
