What Causes Decreased Ability To Taste While On Fluticasone?

I was diagnosed with chronic rhinitis about 4 years ago. I use fluticasone propionate daily to reduce the swelling. Within the last few weeks I have been losing my sense of taste. Do you think it is a side effect from the medication or maybe a symptom of my condition or some other condition?

Hi,

Actually, you are losing your sense of smell, due to chronic rhinitis.
Anosmic patients sometimes complain of loss of taste rather than loss of smell because the sense of smell plays a large part in the appreciation of taste. Sense of smell and taste combine to give a perception of flavor. Normal olfaction is, therefore, necessary to appreciate taste.
Fluticasone Propionate Nasal spray can cause alteration or loss of sense of taste or smell.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Tushar Kanti Biswas, Internal Medicine Specialist
