What Causes Degenerative Disc Disease?

I am wondering if a car wreck (years ago)could be the cause or have aggravate my lumbar degenerate disc disease I have now. I never had problems before the and ever since that I had back pain and spasm. Even after the wreck my back would lock up and not allow me to straighten up. I took Advil for many years for the pain and only recently been diagnosed with lumbar degenerate disc disease
