What Causes Delay In Periods And Breast Tenderness Despite Having Safe Sex?

i was on the depo shot from january 2016 to july 2016. i have not had a period since the beginning of january, right before getting on depo. i had unprotected sex exactly 5 weeks ago & just last week my boobs have gotten really sore, my nipples are sensitive, i have lower abdominal cramps & just in the past two days my head has been hurting very bad & i feel weak. i took a pregnancy test last week & this week but both were negative. is there a possibility i could be pregnant?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Short answer: Yes, there is a possibility.

Hi there,

It is quite common not to have periods when you are on the Depo injections, but no contraceptive is 100% effective. What you are describing sounds quite like early pregnancy symptoms, and I would advise you to drop by your local doctor's for a blood test for beta-hcG. This can detect pregnancies at a very early stage, which can be missed by the urine test.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
