What Causes Delay In Periods And Weight Gain After Using Depo Shot?

Hi, I started using depo last year and only got 3 shots, last shot in September 2015. I last had my periods March 2015. It has been 18 months without my periods, and no I am not pregnant. I went from 55 kg to 94 kg. Depo messed up my life and wanted something with weight gain instead. I got Trigestrel from the pharmacy. Will they bring back my periods and hopefully bring back my weight?

Hi,

The Depo shot contains progesterone and very common side effects of progesterone use is weight gain and problems with the periods so both the problems you are experiencing can be explained with the prolonged use of Depo shot.

Trigestrel contains a progesterone combined with an estrogen and this should cause you to have periods every month and also should have less effect on your weight.

I would recommend you to however have some blood tests to rule out thyroid problems as thyroid can also cause problems with the periods and weight and is a very common problem in females. TSH and FT4 would be the tests to rule out thyroid problems.
