Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, doctor. I am a 21 year old female. I haven t got my periods which I was supposed to get on last month, around April 25th. I involved myself in sexual intercourse on April 20th but I took the pregnancy test twice this week and both the times it came negative. Is the test reliable in the first place ? And moreover, I have been getting my periods on time since the time I attained my puberty. If I m not pregnant what could be the reason for this delay ? What can I do to get my periods ?
First of all, the urine pregnancy test at home is 99%. So you don't need to worry about pregnancy. Coming to delay in periods, the normal menstrual cycle ranges between 21 to 35 days or even 40 days in some people. So, if 40 days have passed only then you can say your period is delayed.
Delay in periods causes are pregnancy, stress, extreme physical exercise, thyroid disease, PCOS, pituitary tumors, ovarian cysts and weight changes. Usage of certain medications like thyroid medication, anti depressants , anti convulsant etc. In my opinion, yours is a normal delay and don't need to worry.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
