Hi,

Depo Provera contains Medroxyprogesterone acetate which is the hormone Progestin, the natural hormone that plays the major role in secretory phase of the Menstrual cycle. The Menstrual cycle consists of initial proliferative phase from the first day of cycle to ovulation followed by the secretory phase which extends till the day of next menstruation. This cycle is controlled by two major hormones estrogen and progesterone.

Contraceptive effect of the Depo Provera is through preventing the development of uterine endometrium which favors the implantation of the fertilized egg for the growth of fetus, changes the consistency of the cervical secretion into thick one which prevents the sperm entry into the uterus thereby preventing fertilization and also by preventing ovulation and release of egg.

Depo Provera shot has a life for 12 weeks. For contraceptive, it should be taken every 12 weeks. Side effects of Depo Provera shot are spotting, irregular bleeding, nausea, weight gain, breast tenderness, it may also stop any further periods in some individuals on prolonged use of about 1 year or more. Visit the Gynecologist for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
