What Causes Delayed Period?

Hello I had sex for the second time ever in my life six days ago. We used a condom and check for rips and there was none. No ejaculation inside of me either. Yet my period was suppose to come on Monday and today is Wednesday and hasnt came. Should i worry? Or is this normal?

Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Periods can be delayed due to multiple reasons.
(ovarian cysts, stress, illness, travel across time zones, Thyroid hormone imbalances, sudden weight changes)

I recommend :
- wait for another 10 days. If you don't get your period by then, take a pregnancy test.
-if negative, see your OBGYN to check for ovarian cysts. (if present, usually resolve themselves in 2-3 months without treatment).
-if your cycles were regular and become irregular for more than 2 months, you will need to check hormone levels (prolactin, Thyroid hormones, estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone, leutenizing hormone)

You may be prescribed medications to induce your period or reduce the size and effects of the cyst.

Condoms are 97% safe and since you made sure no rips were there and he did not ejaculated in you, chances or pregnancy is minimal (less than 3%).
If the intercourse was within a week after or before your period, then chances of pregnancy are even less. (less than 1%).

To answer your question, yes it is normal for an period to be delayed occasionally. As you were sexually active, pregnancy chances (although minimal) is also present

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
