What Causes Delayed Periods After Unprotected Intercourse?

Hello doctor, my period date is between 26th-28th of every month and are quite regular . I had unprotected intercourse with my husband on the 26th night. And my periods have not started till now. As a protection measure can I take unwanted 72 pill or something similar to it?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Having unprotected intercourse always has a risk of getting pregnant. Delay in periods is one of the symptoms that could indicate pregnancy.
However, in your case, it seems you had intercourse towards the end of your cycle, which is not considered as fertile period. Hence the chances of getting pregnant is quite less.
In case you want to avoid pregnancy by taking emergency contraceptive pill like Unwanted 72, you need to take it within 72 hours.
Otherwise, you need to wait patiently till you get your periods.
In case of delay beyond 10 days, you need to take urine pregnancy test and seek medical attention promptly.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
