What Causes Delayed Periods And Negative Pregnancy Result?

I had my periods on 16th April last month. I then got intimate with my partner on 1st and 2nd May 2015. However, he has not penetrated me and we have not had a direct contact between the penis and vagina. I was expecting my period around between 14th - 18th this week, considering that I sometimes get my period either 2-3 days prior or later than my previous date. I have taken a home pregnancy test on 19th May an it tested negative. However, I have still not got my period. I would like to highlight that past couple of days, I have been very very stressed out due to this and I have also been under stress past a month due to my job change and other factors. As per my knowledge, I do not think that my act can lead to pregnancy since there was no penetration and I am still a virgin and I am quiet sure that no sperms or fluid have come in contact with my vagina. Could you please let me know if the home pregnancy test which was taken on 19th May be accurate ? As per my dates provided above, could you tell me if I am pregnant, when can it be detected at the earliest ? Can taking a blood pregnancy test on 20th May detect pregnancy ? Is this the right time to take the test ? In my situation, what are the chances of being pregnant ? Are my periods delayed due to pregnancy or stress. Please respond soon since I am really stressed out due to this. Thanks.

Hello. Thanks for writing to HCM.
I read and understand your question very well.
I try my best to help you in this.

As you have delayed period and negative pregnancy test, there are many causes for this like
1. Excessive weight loss or gain. Although low body weight is a common cause of missed or irregular periods, obesity also can cause menstrual problems.
2. Eating disorders, such as anorexia or bulimia. For more information, see the topic Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa.
3.Increased exercise. Missed periods are common in endurance athletes.
4.Emotional stress.
5.Illness.
6.Travel.
7.Medicines such as birth control methods, which may cause lighter, less frequent, more frequent, or skipped periods or no periods at all.
8.Hormone problems. This may cause a change in the levels of the hormones that the body needs to support menstruation.
9.Illegal drug use.
10.Problems with the pelvic organs such as imperforate hymen, polycystic ovary syndrome, or Asherman's syndrome.
11.Breast-feeding. Many women do not resume regular periods until they have completed breast-feeding.

Do not be panic. Just calm down . Be happy , enjoy your life.
I suggest you to consult a good obstretics and gynecologist for this.
I hope my advice will help you a lot.
Thanks and Regards.
Dr Vijay
