Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 1 year 5 months old and is still on breast milk.. I havent got my periods till now.. My doc advised me to take regestrone 5mg for 2 times for 3 days to get my periods back. But is it safe to take this tablet as my son is still on breast milk. Will it affect my son?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Regestrone tablet is a synthetic form of progestin (norethisterone) and has a similar action to the female hormone, progesterone. It is used to treat menstrual disorders and abnormal vaginal bleeding in women caused due to hormonal imbalances. This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary, and should be used only if benefits outweigh the risks. However, literature suggest that this dose of norethisterone may reduce the quantity of breastmilk, and there seems to be no risk to the breastfeeding baby of a short course of medication at this dose. Expert opinion holds that the risks of progestin-only contraceptive products usually are acceptable for nursing mothers at any time postpartum.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran. S.
