Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Your gynecologist is right. Intercourse within 7 days of period is safe.
However since your periods irregular, ovulation may be irregular too and your last period may not have been a regular period.
If it has been a month after your last period, please take a pregnancy test. If negative, wait for another 2 weeks and take another one.
If that too is negative or your get your period, then no need to worry about pregnancy.
If you wish to know sooner, wait at least for a month (from your last period) and see your
OBGYN to check for a pregnancy by a
blood test.
If negative, an
ultrasound pelvis may reveal cysts that could be the cause for the delay.
As your periods are irregular, I would like to check for
Polycystic ovaries and other hormonal imbalances.
I recommend :
An OBGYN consult
-ultrasound pelvis
-blood tests (
complete blood count, Thyroid hormone levels, prolactin, estrogen,
follicle stimulating hormone, lutenizing hormone, androgen levels)
Based on this, an treatment approach will be initiated.
Please do not self medicate and Consult your doctor for safe termination of pregnancy, if pregnant (unlikely based on the time frame mentioned by you).
-please use
contraception to avoid pregnancy.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
